Yoruba actress Sidikat Odunkanwi, also known as Iyabo Oko, has passed away after a prolonged battle with an illness.
The news of her passing was shared by her daughter, Bisi Aisha, through Instagram posts earlier today. Her captions read, “It is well with your soul mummy, RIP” and “Wurami, rest in peace.”
Last year, Oko’s daughter Olamide revealed that the actress had been dealing with an ischemic stroke, which led her to take a break from acting.
Interestingly, this is not the first time Iyabo Oko has been mistakenly reported as deceased. In January 2022, she was erroneously pronounced dead following a cardiac arrest. However, after three hours, she regained a pulse and exhibited movement, astonishing many who had believed she had passed away.
Hailing from Iwo, Osun State, Iyabo Oko embarked on her acting career in 1973 with the Eda Onileola theatre troupe. She gained recognition for her remarkable performance in the Oga Bello-produced play titled “Oko,” which eventually became her nickname, “Iyabo Oko.” She continued to captivate audiences with her talent, appearing in notable Yoruba movies like “Idunnu Okan” and “Okobo Dimeji.”
Iyabo Oko is survived by her children and grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy in the Yoruba film industry.
