A 49-year-old woman has been apprehended by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly trying to steal a day-old baby from a hospital in the Ojokoro area of the state on Friday, June 23.
According to SP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the state police command, the Ojokoro police division received a tip-off about the incident. The suspect had posed as a patient and managed to gain access to the hospital. Hundeyin explained, ”She entered the female ward and carried a day-old baby boy, while the mother was fast asleep after undergoing surgery. Another patient noticed the fast movement of the suspect with the baby in her hand, alerted the hospital authority, and the suspect was arrested.”
During the subsequent interrogation, it was revealed that the suspect came from Oyo State and confessed to being hired by an individual known as Alfa to obtain a day-old baby for a money ritual. The police further discovered that this was not the first instance of child theft committed by the suspect.
The investigation is ongoing, and once completed, the suspect will face charges in court. Meanwhile, the baby has been safely returned to the mother, providing some relief to the family affected by this alarming incident. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of implementing stringent security measures within hospitals to protect vulnerable newborns and their families from such criminal acts.
