In a plea on Monday night, WHO head Dr. Tedros Adhenom Ghebreyesus appealed to the Israeli military, stating “remove our supplies from our medical warehouse in southern Gaza within 24 hours, as ground operations will put it beyond use,” is extreme.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had notified the global health body to evacuate the warehouse, emphasizing the need to safeguard civilian lives during the renewed military actions in Southern Gaza.
The conflict, initiated by West Jerusalem against Hamas, resumed operations targeting the south of Gaza after the expiration of a humanitarian ceasefire with Hamas.
Dr. Tedros urged Israel to reconsider, stating, “We appeal to Israel to withdraw the order and take every possible measure to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and humanitarian facilities.”
The ongoing conflict, which began almost two months ago, has witnessed intense military actions, including air and artillery strikes, as well as the deployment of ground troops into Gaza. IDF Chief of Staff General Herzi Halevi emphasized that the attack on the south would be “no less powerful” than the attack on the north.
Ronen Bar, head of the Israeli security service Shin Bet, declared, “We will hunt down every member of Hamas everywhere, in Gaza, in the West Bank, in Lebanon, in Turkey, in Qatar,” vowing to pursue them relentlessly, even if it takes “years.”
According to the Gaza health authority, the toll on civilians is devastating, with at least 15,200 reported deaths, primarily affecting women and children.
Concerns about the humanitarian crisis grow as the enclave’s healthcare system is in ruins, making it challenging to assess the actual toll amid the conflict.
