Residents of Sumpe community in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, have raised concerns over the absence of clean water sources in their area.
Pictures shared by a civic tech platform, Monitng, showcased the plight of Sumpe community members, particularly women, who were forced to collect water from contaminated streams for their daily needs.
In a plea directed at relevant authorities, Monitng highlighted the dire situation.
“This is Sumpe community, Bwari Municipal Council FCT, Abuja, where over 1000 residents rely on dirty stream water for their daily consumption.
“We’re are calling you to direct the relevant authorities to do the needful,” the group wrote.
Just last week, another rural community in Nigeria faced a similar water crisis, with residents resorting to traveling to neighboring Niger Republic in search of water.
Videos circulated on social media depicted the hardship endured by these communities.
“This is the community that travels to Niger Republic to get water every blessed day,” a source had captioned the video.
He had continued: “According to them, a person can spend about two weeks before it’s his turn to fetch water and without getting a single 25 litres of water.
“They’re in desperate need of assistance to get water. Please let’s join our hands together and help these people. We’re planning to dig two boreholes for them, the manual and solar boreholes.”
