In a heart-wrenching incident, a 20-year-old student of the University of Ilorin, Sanni Hameedat, has taken her own life after lending a boy she met on Snapchat the sum of N500,000. She consumed a lethal dose of the pesticide known as Sniper.
At the time of this tragic incident, Hameedat was engaged in her SIWES program, as revealed by the private hostel management where she lived.
The management disclosed that the root cause of her suicide can be traced to financial mismanagement and the pressure exerted by app agents who were demanding prompt repayment, leading to her descent into depression.
A representative provided insight into the situation, stating,
“The cause of the suicide can be attributed to financial mismanagement. She had been entrusted with a substantial sum of money by her mother. She crossed paths with a young man on Snapchat and developed a friendship.”
“When the young man claimed that his mother was suffering from breast cancer and urgently needed N500,000, Hameedat, in her compassion and emotional state, decided to help him by lending him half of the N1 million she had for her mother. The young man promised to repay the borrowed money.”
“However, when her mother needed the money back, the young man abruptly cut off all communication, blocking her. This left her deeply troubled, and in an attempt to make up the missing N500,000, she resorted to borrowing money from various apps.”
Hameedat managed to collect N450,000 from the loan apps, adding her savings of N50,000 to meet the borrowed N500,000. Tragically, she ingested a bottle of the pesticide known as Sniper the previous night, leading to her untimely passing.
Her roommate discovered her in distress in the middle of the night, foaming from her mouth and vomiting, and sought help. She was rushed to UITH before being declared dead.
The Student Union President, Ologundudu Adesunkanmi, known as Royal Prince, confirmed the incident and reported it to the appropriate authorities, calling for a comprehensive investigation.
He expressed profound sorrow over the devastating loss of a member of the university community.
