The University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State, has reportedly announced an increase in fees for undergraduate students, according to a statement dated July 20, 2023, released by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), UNILAG branch, after a meeting with the top management staff.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, conveyed the decision to raise fees for UNILAG undergraduate students during the meeting with representatives from the three non-academic staff unions on July 20th to address issues concerning members’ welfare.
Under the new fee structure, students studying medicine will now pay N190,250, while courses requiring laboratory and studio use will cost N140,250. For students without lab and studio requirements, the fees will be N100,750.
During the meeting, Rasaki Yusuf, a representative from SSANU, requested a rebate for staff members with children attending the university. However, the Vice-Chancellor maintained that the new charges were set nationally and could not be modified for specific student categories.
To accommodate staff members’ financial needs, Prof. Ogunsola offered the option of paying fees in installments, but with the condition that the payment must be completed one month before final exams.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the university’s Public Relations Officer, Alagba Ibraheem, were unsuccessful, as calls went unanswered and text messages remained unacknowledged.
