During the Second Russia-Africa Summit and Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an extraordinary commitment, igniting hope and optimism across the continent. He vowed to lead a transformative partnership with Africa, emphasizing cooperation in political, economic, and humanitarian areas for a brighter future.
Despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic and existing sanctions, Russia demonstrated resilience and recorded substantial growth in trade with Africa. Mutual trade between Russia and the continent reached about 18 billion US dollars in the previous year, with a remarkable 35 per cent surge in the first half of 2023 alone.
The key focus areas in this partnership are energy, subsoil utilization, and agriculture, alongside research, technology, education, and culture. The goal is to make practical decisions that strengthen trade, economic cooperation, food and energy security, and national healthcare systems.
President Putin acknowledged Africa’s immense potential, with its impressive average annual GDP growth outpacing the global average. As Africa’s population approaches 1.5 billion and its middle class expands, there are exciting prospects for economic growth and prosperity.
The summit played a pivotal role in fostering bilateral ties, leading to significant trade milestones achieved in 2022. With President Putin’s assurance of further increasing trade and cooperation, Africa looks forward to continued growth and equitable partnerships. The summit has instilled newfound hope, as African leaders expressed their commitment to forging equitable partnerships with all nations, particularly in the economic realm.
