In a heart-wrenching interview with TVC, Promise Aloba, the mother of the late singer Mohbad, has revealed the harrowing experiences her son endured due to physical attacks and bullying after his departure from Marlian Music. She provided poignant insights into the life he led and the deep care he had for his family.
In her Yoruba interview, she expressed the following:
“I refrained from telling people that I am Mohbad’s mother because he feared for my safety, believing I might be kidnapped or harmed.
“I had only spent five months in the new house he rented for me, and he visited me three times. He relocated me from my previous residence to Ikorodu, explaining that he wanted to visit me regularly.
“He rented a substantial space, comprising three shops, for me, which I have yet to open. He provided the funds for me to purchase two large freezers and a sizable generator. On the day he passed away, he promised to send me five million Naira so I could purchase merchandise to stock up my shops.
“His wife had planned to meet me, suggesting that I find someone to support me because we couldn’t buy all the goods at once, and it would take us three days to complete the purchases.
“But now, I am fearful and cannot return to Ikorodu. I enlisted someone’s help to rent out the shop and provide me with the funds. My son did not lead a joyful life; he lived in constant fear.
“Whenever I visited him, he would remain seated, and I would sit beside him. Later, I would accompany him upstairs to sleep, but he would shake his head. I had thought that the problems and attacks had ceased, but he was assaulted again after releasing his EP recently. I witnessed it twice; he would go to the police station to report.
“I spent ten days with him, unaware that he would pass away. I left on a Saturday, and he passed away on a Monday. I left because he had a show, and he begged me not to go. He implored me to stay. I informed him that I needed to attend church on Sunday, having missed it for two weeks and needing to pray to find myself again. Mentioning the church was what convinced him to let me go.
“Before I departed, he and his wife played a prank on me. He delayed giving me my allowance because he knew I would leave if he provided it. He typically gave me a monthly allowance for my expenses.”
