A somber incident unfolded in the Ago Palace area of Lagos, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries, as a confrontation between a driver and a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official turned fatal.
This unfortunate occurrence transpired on Tuesday morning when the driver of a Toyota Sienna was accused of breaking traffic rules and attempting to escape the authorities’ grasp.
At the heart of the dispute was a LASTMA official stationed at Okota Roundabout, who engaged in a heated struggle with the driver, attempting to detain him for his traffic violation.
Tragically, amidst the chaotic confrontation, the driver lost control of his vehicle, colliding with a tricycle. This devastating collision claimed the life of the tricycle operator and left several passengers injured.
The incident triggered anger and frustration among bystanders, leading to an irate mob descending upon the embattled LASTMA official.
Tensions escalated dangerously, prompting the arrival of a police team to prevent a potential lynching. The officers, in an effort to disperse the agitated crowd, resorted to firing tear gas canisters.
In addition to restoring order, the police also removed barricades erected by the protesters on the road and subsequently escorted the LASTMA official away from the tumultuous scene.
