A stray bullet fired by unidentified hoodlums, suspected to be cultists, has tragically claimed the life of a 100-level female student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.
The incident unfolded late on Thursday evening near the bustling Miracle Junction in Ifite Awka. Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted that the hoodlums had been chasing an as-yet-unidentified tricycle operator, intending to harm him. Unfortunately, their aim was off, and one of the bullets struck the young student, who was innocently walking along the roadside.
The victim, known simply as Uche, was a student in the medical laboratory department of the institution. She had been on her way to the market when the stray bullet took her life.
A source at the scene stated, “This deceased was a 100-level student of the Faculty of Health Science, she was killed on Thursday evening by a stray bullet shot by suspected cultists who were chasing a tricycle operator at the popular Miracle Junction. The tricycle driver was shot too, and he pretended to be dead, but surprisingly, he stood up after a while and escaped when his attackers had left thinking he was dead.”
The deceased’s body was later transported to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the incident, describing it as “very unfortunate” and suggesting that it was cult-related. He assured the public that the police were actively working with eyewitnesses to identify the culprits and bring them to justice. He also emphasized the heightened police presence and patrols in the area.
“The command would not relent in waging war against cultism and other forms of crimes in the state,” Ikenga stated, adding that residents should continue to cooperate with the police by reporting any suspicious activities.
