In a solemn commemoration, Omoyele Sowore, the convener of #RevolutionNow, voices his anguish over the continued absence of justice, 37 years after the murder of journalist and activist, Dele Giwa.
On Sunday, October 19, 1986, Dele Giwa lost his life in a devastating explosion caused by a bomb hidden in a parcel at his residence on 25, Talabi Street, off Adeniyi Jones Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos.
In a heartfelt memorial post dedicated to the late activist, Sowore pointed accusatory fingers at former military dictator Ibrahim Babangida, alleging his involvement in the assassination.
Sowore, who ran for the presidency as the African Action Congress (AAC) candidate in both the 2019 and 2023 elections, offered a solemn prayer that Dele Giwa’s spirit would haunt those responsible for his untimely demise.
The mystery surrounding Giwa’s death has haunted Nigerians for years, as the government has failed to bring anyone to justice or provide any significant revelations about the murder.
Giwa’s assassination was widely believed to be a meticulously planned act, with the use of a letter bomb being an unprecedented and shocking occurrence in Nigeria’s history.
As the nation marks the 37th anniversary of Giwa’s tragic death, Sowore took to his social media platform (formerly known as Twitter) to reflect on the events. In his post, he stated,
“Exactly today (October 19, 1986), 37 years ago, military head of state, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (notoriously known as ‘IBB’) sent a letter bomb to the Lagos residence of topmost journalist, Dele Giwa. The bomb ripped through his lower abdomen and killed him.”
He went on to lament that, to this day, those responsible for the murder have not faced justice and paid his respects, saying,
“Rest in Power, Dele Giwa. May your spirit continue to torment Babangida and others who conspired to kill you in your prime.”
