Nigerian musician Seun Kuti recently opened up about his philanthropic endeavors, revealing that upon his release from Panti Police custody, he took it upon himself to renovate certain facilities within the cell.
He emphasized that his actions were motivated by a desire to improve conditions for those who might find themselves in similar circumstances, including Naira Marley, the boss of Marlian record label.
Kuti’s arrest stemmed from an incident captured on camera in which he was seen slapping a police officer. Reflecting on his experiences and the uncertainty of tomorrow, he explained,
“Some things I did that I didn’t announce, but it’s important for me to talk about them here. It could be you tomorrow. When I left the Panti cell, do you know the first thing I did when I got home? I gave my people money to renovate that cell, to change the toilet, shower, and paint the walls. I paid for it out of my pocket because I realized I could end up back there tomorrow.”
His compassionate gesture highlights a commitment to improving the conditions of detention facilities, making them more humane for those who may, unfortunately, find themselves behind bars.
As he concluded, “At least, Naira (Naira Marley) can enjoy my charity there.”
