Chief Frank Kokori, a prominent trade unionist and former General Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), has died at the age of 80.
His passing coincided with his 80th birthday, marking the end of a life dedicated to advocating for workers’ rights and democracy in Nigeria.
Reports indicate that Kokori passed away at 1:30 am on Thursday, with his personal assistant, Atawada Barry Oke, announcing the sad news around 2:30 am. Kokori’s health had reportedly deteriorated on Monday, rendering him unable to interact with those around him. He was placed on life support during his final days.
Known for his unwavering commitment to workers’ rights, Kokori had a significant role in the struggle for democracy in Nigeria. Although initially slated to head the board of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) by former President Muhammadu Buhari, he was later dropped. After retiring into a quiet life, Kokori recently faced health challenges.
His death comes just one month after he raised concerns from his hospital bed on November 9, 2023, stating that he felt neglected and abandoned despite his substantial contributions to the democratic growth of the country.
