President Bola Tinubu is set to depart India following the G20 summit, embarking on a crucial journey to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
His mission: to engage in high-level talks with President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his team in an effort to resolve the contentious issues surrounding the suspension of visa issuance to Nigerians and the suspension of Emirates Airlines flights to Nigeria.
Emirates Airline suspended its flight operations to Nigeria in October 2022, citing concerns related to the country’s inability to repatriate trapped funds. Furthermore, the UAE government imposed a ban on nationals from 20 African countries, including Nigeria, from entering Dubai, the capital of the UAE.
Segun Dada, the Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Social Media, announced via his social media handle that the President is taking proactive steps to address the visa standoff.
This decision comes after President Tinubu received the Letter of Credence from Ambassador Salem Saeed Al-Shamsi of the UAE on August 24 at the presidential villa in Abuja.
President Tinubu has expressed his willingness to personally intervene in Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with the UAE.
