Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, expressed his reluctance to attend the inauguration of President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, stating that it would be “highly unusual.” Obi’s spokesperson, Tai Obasi, also denied any involvement in organizing a protest against the Federal Government’s insistence on inaugurating Tinubu.
According to PUNCH, these statements were made in response to speculations that Obi and his Obidient movement planned to stage a demonstration near Eagle Square to express their discontent with the President-elect’s inauguration. Obasi clarified, “We have no knowledge of such a report or the individuals behind the proposed protest. I can confidently state that my principal is unaware of any such plans.”
Obasi further explained, “Peter Obi and his followers are committed to their cause. Although they may occasionally act independently, despite being advised to remain calm, their frustration stems from the unfair treatment Obi has faced despite being a beacon of hope for them. They have faithfully supported him throughout.”
When asked about Obi’s attendance at Tinubu’s inauguration, considering reports that political parties and their candidates received individual invitations, Obasi responded, “My principal is a humble and reasonable man who consistently seeks peace and national unity. However, it would be highly unusual for him to attend the ceremony of a man whose electoral victory he is currently challenging in court.”
“My principal would not act in such a peculiar and illogical manner. I cannot confirm whether he received an invitation to the swearing-in ceremony, but I can assure you that he will not be present.”
