His Royal Majesty, Oba (Engr.) Moses Oluwafemi Agunsoye, Abikehin-Ekun, Agunsoye II, the Elegboro of Ìjẹ̀bú-Jẹ̀ṣà has charged the 2023 Batch B Stream 2 Corps Members to savour the beauty in the nation’s diverse culture. He stated that every culture has its own uniqueness and similarities to other cultures.
He enlightened the Members on some of the peculiarities of the Yoruba culture making reference to greetings, dressing, worship, among others. He further enlightened them on the enriching traditions and culture of Yoruba land. He underscored the integral role of these traditions within Osun State and the broader region, emphasizing their adherence and importance.
The discourse opened with an exploration of the role of Esu, a guardian entity against malevolent forces. Oba Agunsoye extended blessings to the Corps Members for longevity, while also advising them to navigate within defined boundaries to avoid penalties.
He continued by emphasizing the necessity of respecting the State’s laws and cautioned against transgressions. The 33rd traditional ruler of Ìjẹ̀bú-Jẹ̀ṣà, held a pivotal position in the discussion, highlighting Yoruba culture’s depth. The importance of placing faith in divine guidance and practicing patience resonated, encouraging attendees to make informed decisions rather than rushing.
Within his discourse, Oba Agunsoye delineated the distinction between cultural heritage and religion. He highlighted reverence for Ogun, the deity safeguarding against iron-related harm. He also gave examples of some taboos in the Yoruba culture and highlighted some of the festivals Corps Members should refrain from attending while making it known that the Yorubas are very friendly and accommodating.
Speaking further at the traditional lecture held at the Multipurpose Hall of the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ede on Monday, the Elegboro elaborated on ceremonial artifacts that symbolized the state’s heritage: the walking stick, bead, Agbada, the cap and the talking drum. He underscored the sanctity of marriage and the need for parental consent. The State’s attractions for tourists such as, Osun Osogbo, Erin Jẹ̀ṣà waterfalls, and the art gallery, were also highlighted.
As the presentation concluded, Oba Agunsoye encouraged Corps Members to embrace the chance to explore these attractions, enhancing their understanding of the State’s richness and making the most of their time within its bounds. His final words were a blend of blessings, prayers, and well-wishes for the Corps Members’ endeavors and stay.
Meanwhile, the NYSC Osun State Coordinator, Mr Agbor Ndoma Obim encouraged the Corps Members to respect the culture and traditions of the State of their deployment. He made it known while welcoming Ọba Agunsoye to the Camp.
Introducing the lecture to the Corps Members, he reminded them of the need to familiarise themselves with the culture and tradition of the people of their host communities. He appreciated Ọba Agunsoye for honouring the invitation of the Scheme to deliver the traditional lecture.
