The authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, have issued an apology in response to a widely circulated video depicting a lecturer assaulting a student.
The incident, which sparked public outrage after surfacing on social media, prompted the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, to intervene.
In a statement released on Thursday, the university expressed regret over the video, emphasizing that such behavior is not reflective of the institution’s character.
“Displeased with what he saw in the video, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, has waded into the matter with a view to setting up a committee to unravel the circumstances surrounding the whole scenario,” the school said.
OUA spokesperson Abiodun Olarewaju quoted the Vice Chancellor, stating,
“What happened in the viral video is not in our character. We are a decent and diligent set of people who will not tolerate any form of abuse or maltreatment from anyone.
“We, therefore, apologise to the people, especially our alumni, whose sensibilities might have been assaulted by that shenanigan.”
The university urged students to continue their activities, assuring stakeholders that justice will be served appropriately in response to the incident.
