Uchechi Kanu, spouse of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), expressed gratitude towards Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, representing Anambra South Senatorial District, for enabling her recent visit to her husband held in the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja.
In a Radio Biafra broadcast on Sunday, Mrs. Kanu revealed that despite previous refusals by DSS officials, she managed to see her husband on April 16. Kanu has been in DSS custody since his extradition from Kenya in 2021, following his re-arrest for allegedly violating bail conditions set in 2017.
During the radio session, Mrs. Kanu addressed Igbo communities in the United Kingdom and worldwide, highlighting the challenges she faced in accessing her husband. She commended Senator Ubah for swiftly facilitating her visit, acknowledging the efforts of many Igbo leaders who are silently working towards Kanu’s release.
She said, “Let me use this opportunity to thank Senator Ifeanyi Ubah who moved swiftly to facilitate my visit to my husband in DSS custody. I thank you sir.
“I thank other Igbo politicians, governors and political office holders who are concerned about the plight of my husband. A lot of these elites are concerned about the unlawful detention of my husband, and are working silently to secure a round table discussion for his release. I’m thankful to them.”
Ubah also confirmed to journalists on Monday, when contacted, that he facilitated the visit of Mrs Kanu to her husband when he learnt that she was finding it difficult to visit him in detention.
He said, “Yes, she was in Nigeria and she approached me and told me that she needed to visit her husband, but was finding it difficult, so I immediately intervened. I visited her husband too with her in the company of Barr. Ejiofor. She met with her husband in the DSS facility on April 16.”
