The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has taken a significant step towards improving the efficiency and revenue generation of the Lagos and Tin Can Island Port complexes. The Federal government, through NPA, has inaugurated modern Control Towers to enhance performance and safety while ensuring operational comfort for government agencies within the ports.
The Managing Director of NPA, Mr. Mohammed Bello Koko, emphasized that the new control towers would help the Authority achieve its strategic intent of becoming the maritime logistics hub for sustainable port services in Africa. Safety and security are essential operational preconditions necessary to actualize the Authority’s regional hub status.
The new control towers will significantly improve the ports’ capacity and service delivery for stakeholders within the industry. The facility will increase collaboration between government agencies and provide operational comfort for sister agencies that operate within the ports.
The commissioning of the control tower signposts the Authority’s unwavering commitment to improving operational efficiency through aggressive infrastructure and equipment renewal. The tower’s diverse functions such as Vessel Traffic Management, Navigation Assistance, Advance Visibility, Safety and Security, Emergency Response, Communication, Resource Management, and Disaster Risk Mitigation are the reasons the equipping of this facility is a top priority for the management team.
Mr. Koko pledged to equip and re-equip the facility while training and retraining its users to be best-in-class, ensuring sustainable, efficient port services in a safe, secure, and customer-friendly environment. The NPA has also partnered with NLNG Ship Management Limited to provide VTS and ensure improved operational efficiency.
In conclusion, the inauguration of the modern control towers represents a significant investment in improving Nigeria’s ports’ operational efficiency and infrastructure. The NPA’s commitment to continuous improvement and collaboration with sister agencies is commendable and bodes well for the growth and development of the maritime logistics industry in Africa.
