In a heartbreaking incident, Maikeffi Redemption Sarah, a 21-year-old 100-level Microbiology student at Nasarawa State University (NSUK), Keffi, has reportedly committed suicide by ingesting a poisonous substance.
Described as the fourth and last born of her family, Sarah’s untimely death is attributed to profound emotions and depression.
The distressing event unfolded on a Friday evening at an off-campus lodge near the Family and Friends Hotel area, opposite Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
Sarah’s male friend, who conveyed the tragic news on Facebook, disclosed that they had spoken on Thursday, making plans for her to attend a wedding on Saturday in Akwanga and return on Sunday.
“We spoke with her Thursday evening and she was to come to Akwanga from Keffi, attend a wedding today Saturday, then go back tomorrow Sunday, just for me to hear of her sudden death” he said.
Despite efforts by some students and neighbors to intervene and save her using palm oil, their attempts proved futile. The sudden loss has left friends and family in shock.
The lifeless body of Sarah has been deposited at the mortuary in Keffi. A relative shared on Facebook that her burial is scheduled for today, Saturday, in Akwanga, her hometown.
The circumstances surrounding her death underscore the pressing issue of mental health awareness within academic communities.
