The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Nigeria has issued a public warning regarding a batch of Sprite 50cl glass bottles that have been found to be tainted. The discovery was made after a consumer complaint, which prompted NAFDAC’s post-marketing surveillance unit to investigate the matter.
After a thorough inquiry, NAFDAC’s investigation revealed that a specific batch (BN: AZ6 22:32) of Sprite 50cl glass bottles, manufactured on April 18, 2023 (MFD: 180423), contained foreign particles that could be harmful.
To address the issue, NAFDAC has taken samples from the affected batch and will conduct laboratory analysis in their own facility. The agency has also instructed its zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and remove the compromised batch from circulation.
NAFDAC is determined to identify the cause of contamination by thoroughly inspecting the manufacturing site to ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.
In addition, NAFDAC has required the Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (Abuja plant), the manufacturer of the affected batch, to initiate a recall of the tainted product and report to NAFDAC for strict monitoring.
NAFDAC is urging individuals who have the contaminated Sprite 50cl glass bottles to surrender them to the nearest NAFDAC office. Distributors, retailers, and consumers are advised to exercise caution and refrain from consuming, selling, or distributing the compromised product.
