The Oyo State Police Command has arrested Monday Chukwuka for reportedly selling his one-day-old granddaughter for N700,000. The suspect was apprehended at his hideout in the Ibafo area of Ogun State based on credible intelligence.
According to Vanguard, during the parade of the suspect at the Command Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, the Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, revealed that on July 10, 2023, a team of police received information about the abduction of a day-old baby girl from her teenage mother, Sarah Chukwuka, in Oyo town. The baby was then sold to a criminal gang operating a baby factory in Abia State.
Monday, the biological father of the teenage mother, confessed to the crime during an intelligence-led interview. He explained that he took the baby from his daughter right after birth, claiming he would find someone to care for the child. He then transported the infant to Abia State, where he sold her to the owner of a baby factory for N700,000.
An operation was conducted at the baby factory in Abia State, leading to the arrest of Popoola Bunmi and four other accomplices, Chinwedu Peter, Chidinma Blessing, Chuckwu Christopher, and Favour Chukwu. They were found with new birth certificates and equipment for baby deliveries. The suspects couldn’t provide satisfactory explanations regarding the origin of the babies found in the factory.
Monday, the main suspect, admitted to selling the baby due to financial constraints and used the money to set up a shop and purchase goods. Sarah, the teenage mother, was unaware of her father’s intentions and believed he intended to temporarily care for the baby before returning her after two years.
The suspected buyer of the baby, Favor Chukwuka, claimed she purchased the child at the request of a childless couple, receiving N50,000 for her role.
