In a bid to improve train safety and ensure a clear right of way for trains, the Lagos State Government has initiated a significant operation involving the demolition of markets situated around train stations.
This ambitious undertaking, led by the Lagos State Building Control Agency, kicked off at 10:20 a.m. on Saturday morning, commencing with the Lateef Jakande Train Station.
Subsequently, the demolition team moved swiftly to five other vital stations, extending their efforts to clear traders from the rail tracks and establish a safe passage for trains.
The stations targeted for this operation included Iju Railway Station, Ebute-Metta Railway Station, Yaba Railway Station, Agege Railway Station, and Mushin Railway Station.
Our correspondent was present on-site to witness the determined enforcement officials wielding sledgehammers and employing cutting equipment to dismantle extended walls adjacent to the road.
The demolition efforts also involved the removal of shanties and the clearing of goods from makeshift shops and tables, as reported by Punch News.
This decisive action by the Lagos State Government followed a stern warning issued by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu earlier in the week.
The governor gave traders selling their wares on train tracks a two-day ultimatum to vacate the area, highlighting the importance of safety and efficient rail transportation in the bustling city.
