The Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a suspected cultist, seizing a semi-automatic pistol, four live ammunition, and a hat bearing a cult insignia from his possession.
According to a statement issued by SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Public Relations Officer, the police command disclosed the arrest through a Twitter post on Sunday.
The statement revealed that the suspect, identified as Idris Ayinla, aged 33, was traveling in a red Toyota Matrix with registration number EKY 638 EX, alongside three other individuals. While en route to Oniru Beach, the vehicle was flagged down by police officers on routine patrol along Admiralty Road, Ikoyi.
Upon stopping the car, one of the occupants attempted to bribe the officers with money, which they declined. Instead, they insisted on conducting a search of the vehicle. Sensing danger, all the suspects fled from the car, and during the escape, Idris Ayinla fired at the officers.
In response, the operatives swiftly acted, resulting in Ayinla sustaining a gunshot wound to his leg. He was subsequently apprehended, and his firearm was recovered.
The suspect has been transferred to the Command headquarters to be integrated into the ongoing investigations concerning the activities of cultists in the state. Following the investigation, all individuals found responsible will be presented for trial. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects who fled the scene.
