In a press conference in Abuja on Monday, TUC President Festus Osifo revealed that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have instructed their affiliates to withdraw services nationwide starting midnight on November 14, 2023.
Osifo emphasized that the strike’s duration would be contingent on “government at all levels waking up to their responsibility.”
The decision to strike also stems from the violent incident on November 1 in Owerri, Imo State, where NLC President Joe Ajaero and several congress executives were assaulted.
According to Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Information, Ajaero was apprehended by the police prior to a state-wide protest in Imo.
While the police asserted that Ajaero was taken into protective custody to prevent a potential mob attack, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma accused the NLC President of meddling in the state’s political affairs. The unresolved labor issues in Imo State further contribute to the unions’ call for nationwide industrial action.
