The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Paul Odama, held a press conference where he presented a middle-aged medical doctor, Ayodele Joseph, who stands accused of sedating and raping a nurse during a surgical procedure at his hospital in Ilorin.
Joseph, the Chief Medical Director of Ayodele Hospital in the Sawmill Area of Ilorin, was one of the 13 suspects paraded before the media at the Police Headquarters.
During the briefing, Commissioner Odama described Joseph as one of the most dangerous medical practitioners in the state and cautioned the public against seeking treatment from him.
PUNCH reported that according to Odama, “On the 5th of May, 2023, a female victim (name withheld), a nurse by profession, reported to the Police that she went to Ayodele Hospital in Ilorin for surgery. The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Ayodele Joseph, sedated the patient during the treatment, causing her to lose consciousness.”
“Prior to the sedation, the patient took precautionary measures by positioning her phone to secretly record the surgery without the doctor’s knowledge. Upon waking up after the surgery, she discovered that she was completely naked. Upon reviewing the recorded video, she found evidence of Dr. Ayodele Joseph engaging in non-consensual sexual intercourse with her while she was sedated.”
Odama further explained, “The investigation led to the recovery of the video evidence of the doctor’s sexual activity with the victim, which was supported by the medical examinations conducted on the victim.”
“This same suspect, Dr. Ayodele Joseph, has recently been charged in court by the Police for multiple offenses, including Criminal Conspiracy, Negligent Conduct, Causing Hurt by Act Endangering Life or Personal Safety of Others, and Culpable Homicide. These charges arose from his unprofessional conduct that resulted in the questionable death of one Nneka Akanike at his hospital.”
The police commissioner revealed that the state branch of the Nigeria Medical Association had been informed of the case. He also mentioned that the hospital premises had been cordoned off and that the doctor would face additional charges of rape once the investigation concludes.
However, Joseph vehemently denied the rape accusation, asserting that the nurse in question was actually his girlfriend.
The medical director claimed that the nurse was his employee and that they had been in a relationship for eight years. He described the alleged rape as a setup orchestrated by the nurse.
Joseph confirmed that the nurse, who had undergone treatment and surgery for an ectopic pregnancy at his hospital, intended to extort money from him.
“She is my girlfriend, and we have been together for eight years. I trained her as a nurse, sponsored her education at a School of Nursing in Lagos, and even employed her. How could I rape someone with whom I have had consensual intercourse multiple times? She is merely attempting to frame me to extort money. She has already received a significant sum of N500,000, which she still demands more of,” Joseph claimed.
