Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi issued a stark warning on Sunday regarding Israel’s continued bombardment of Gaza, signaling a potential for increased international involvement in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Raisi’s statement comes amidst a backdrop of escalating violence in the region.
Since October 7, when Hamas militants breached the border, Israel has launched a relentless assault on the Gaza Strip, claiming to have caused the deaths of over 1,400 individuals, a majority of whom were civilians, according to Israeli authorities.
In contrast, the health ministry in Gaza, under Hamas control, reports that more than 8,000 people have lost their lives, with half of them being children. Gaza, home to 2.4 million people, has long been plagued by poverty and conflict.
Raisi’s message was delivered via X, formerly known as Twitter, where he stated, “The crimes of the Zionist regime have crossed the red lines, and this may force everyone to take action.”
The Iranian president also criticized the United States, saying, “Washington asks us to not do anything, but they keep giving widespread support to Israel.”
He further mentioned, “The US sent messages to the Axis of Resistance but received a clear response on the battlefield,” using a term commonly employed by Iranian officials to denote Iran and its allies, such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah, Yemen’s Huthis, and other Shiite forces in Iraq and Syria.
Although the exact reference of his statement was not immediately clear, there has been a series of attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria, along with escalating clashes between Hezbollah and Israeli forces along the Lebanese border since the outset of the Gaza conflict.
Iran, a significant financial and military supporter of Hamas, celebrated the October 7 attacks as a “success” but denied direct involvement in the offensive, during which 230 individuals were reportedly taken hostage by Israeli authorities.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, the Iranian president clarified, “Iran considers it its duty to support the resistance groups, but … the resistance groups are independent in their opinion, decision, and action.”
He also asserted, “The United States knows very well our current capabilities and knows that they are impossible to overcome.”
