The hearing in the suit filed by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for the release of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has been adjourned by the Supreme Court. The adjournment sets the next hearing date for September 14.
As reported on November 3, 2022, IPOB initiated a legal action at the apex court challenging the verdict of the Appellate Court, which had halted the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Igbo self-determination group.
Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the lead lawyer for IPOB and a human rights activist, issued a statement saying, “We have appealed to the Supreme Court to overturn the ruling of the Court of Appeal that stayed the execution of the court’s judgment, which discharged him and prevented any further detention or prosecution of Nnamdi Kanu on any charge/indictment within Nigeria’s courts.”
He further added, “After a thorough review of the ruling by our defense team, led by the esteemed Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), it was decided that the ruling, which lacks legal or factual basis, should be immediately appealed and set aside by the Supreme Court.”
“We have filed an appeal against the ruling of the Court of Appeal delivered on October 28, 2022, and will actively pursue the administrative process to ensure that both appeals receive expedited hearings in accordance with the existing fast-track rules of the Supreme Court,” Ejiofor explained.
Prior to the hearing, Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s special counsel, urged the Supreme Court to ensure justice in his client’s trial.
