In a devastating incident, a boat carrying wedding guests capsized, resulting in the tragic demise of 103 individuals. The Kwara Police Command has officially confirmed this heartbreaking event, which took place at Egbu village in the Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara.
SP Ajayi Okasanmi, the spokesperson for the Command, solemnly acknowledged the occurrence on Tuesday. The ill-fated passengers were returning from a joyous wedding ceremony when the boat they were aboard capsized, cutting short their lives.
The village now finds itself shrouded in a profound aura of sorrow and despair due to this unfathomable tragedy. As the investigation continues, the names of the survivors will be released in due course.
Mohammed Liman, the Transition Implementation Committee Chairman in Patigi, has disclosed that the number of fatalities resulting from the accident stands at 110. He cited a statement by Bala Mohammed, a respected community leader, which conveyed the grim reality of the incident.
Quoting Bala Mohammed’s words, Liman shared, “About 110 people died in the boat mishap in our area. We’re going to tell you about the tragedy and unforgettable memory that occurred to my people from our village and other neighboring villages close to us.”
“Our village people went to a wedding ceremony in another village called Gboti, and the boat carried about 270 people, and almost 110 people were lost. This is an unforgettable memory and tragedy in the history of our village,” he said, reflecting on the profound impact of this devastating incident.
