Nigerian music sensation Davido made headlines on Thursday as he announced his latest act of generosity. The acclaimed singer revealed that he had disbursed a substantial sum of N237 million to numerous orphanages across Nigeria.
This act of philanthropy comes after Davido’s previous successful endeavor, where he distributed N250 million to 292 Nigerian orphanages a year and four months ago. What’s intriguing is that this all began as a lighthearted challenge before his birthday in November 2021. Davido playfully encouraged his colleagues to contribute N1 million each for him, which unexpectedly transformed into one of the most significant fundraisers in recent Nigerian history. In a matter of 78 hours, Davido managed to accumulate N200 million in donations.
Initially intending to clear his brand new Rolls Royce from the Lagos port with the funds, Davido later decided to redirect the money towards orphanages throughout the country. To ensure transparency and proper allocation, a five-person committee, chaired by Titi Adebayo, was formed to oversee the disbursement process.
Through The David Adeleke Foundation (DAF), Davido made this substantial donation possible, with the primary objective of making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. The foundation’s latest contribution amounted to N237 million, distributed to 424 orphanages, benefiting a total of 13,818 children.
Davido expressed his heartfelt commitment to assisting the less privileged, evident in the establishment of the DAF in 2022. This foundation has successfully raised millions of Naira and consistently provided much-needed funds to numerous orphanages, significantly improving the lives of countless children.
In October 2022, the DAF initiated a campaign to reach out to compassionate and influential individuals and corporations across Nigeria, seeking their support in raising funds for the less fortunate. The response was overwhelming, resulting in the impressive N237 million donation.
