Authorities in California have announced that hikers have discovered human remains in the Mount San Antonio area, where British actor Julian Sands went missing five months ago.
According to a statement from the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department, the remains were found in the wilderness on Saturday morning. Civilian hikers immediately contacted the Fontana Sheriff’s Station upon making the discovery near the mountain.
The body has been transported to the coroner’s office for identification, and the process is expected to be completed by next week.
Julian Sands, known for his role in the 1985 film “A Room with a View,” disappeared in January while hiking on Mount San Antonio, also known as Mount Baldy, a 10,000-foot (3,000-meter) peak located just outside Los Angeles.
Despite being an experienced hiker who expressed his joy in being close to mountain summits on cold mornings, Sands went missing during a period of heavy snowfall caused by severe storms that struck California in December and January.
The area where Sands disappeared is the highest point in the San Gabriel Mountains and a popular destination for Los Angeles residents. The region has been identified as increasingly treacherous, with eight known deaths occurring between 2017 and 2022, as noted by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office.
Two weeks after the search for Sands began, his brother Nick acknowledged that he had come to terms with the likelihood that Sands would not be found alive. “He has not yet been declared missing, presumed dead, but I know in my heart that he has gone,” Nick shared, as reported by local media in their hometown of Yorkshire, England.
