A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kano has remanded 24-year-old housewife, Hafsat Surajo, for allegedly stabbing her house help, Nafiu Hafizu, to death.
Hafsat, a resident of Unguwa Uku Quarters Kano, faces trial on charges of attempting suicide and culpable homicide. Chief Magistrate Hadiza Abdulrahman ordered her detention and scheduled the next hearing for February 1, 2024.
Prosecution counsel Lamido Sorondinki told the court that on December 20, 2023, Hafsat attempted suicide, injuring her left hand. During the incident, she also fatally stabbed Nafiu, leading to his demise.
Hafsat pleaded guilty to the first charge but denied the second. The alleged offences violate Sections 281 and 221 of the Penal Code.
In a related development, Hafsat’s husband, Dayyabu Abdullahi, faced the court on charges of conspiracy, concealing facts, and providing false information regarding Nafiu’s death.
“The defendants misled and gave false information to the deceased family by saying he died as a result of pile surgery,” he said.
Dayyabu denied the allegations. The charges against him contravene Sections 97, 277, and 178 of the Penal Code.
Defence counsels Rabiu Sidi and Rabiu Abdullahi sought bail for the defendants, citing relevant legal provisions. However, the judge ordered their detention and set the next hearing for January 8, 2024.
