The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended a 25-year-old cattle rustler, Muhammadu Bello, on charges of allegedly killing his employer, Yay Mohammed, a cattle dealer from Soku Village near Iseyin Town.
Muhammadu Bello was paraded alongside 32 other suspects at the state Police Command Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, on Friday, September 22, 2023. These individuals were arrested for their alleged involvement in various crimes, including cultism, armed robbery, and impersonation.
The suspect is accused of brutally murdering his employer within Soku forest in Iseyin Local Government Area of the state and subsequently absconding with the deceased’s 20 cows and 14 sheep.
Providing details to the press, the spokesperson of the police command, SP. Adewale Osifeso, confirmed that, “On 17th September, 2023, at about 0630hrs, actionable information was received at the Command Monitoring Unit from a credible source in Iseyin town. This information indicated that a nomadic cattle herder was seen at Kara Market, Iseyin, searching for a cattle dealer willing to purchase a large herd of cattle.”
“In response to this credible information, a team of operatives from the unit was dispatched to Iseyin town for swift intervention. During this operation, the suspect, who later identified himself as Mohammed Bello, was apprehended.
“Upon interrogation, he confessed to being a cattle rustler and subsequently led the operatives to a dense forest where he had concealed twenty (20) live cows and fourteen sheep that he had rustled from his employer,” the PPRO stated.
The investigation took a grimmer turn when authorities discovered that the suspect had not only rustled the livestock but had also allegedly killed his employer, identified as YAU MOHAMMED. The victim was buried in a shallow grave within SOKU Forest. The club, which the suspect confessed to using in the murder, was also recovered from the crime scene.
SP. Adewale Osifeso concluded, “Investigation is in progress with assurances of communicating further developments.” Among the exhibits recovered from the suspect were 20 live cows, 14 live sheep, and a club.
