Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State made an impromptu visit to the Sokoto Specialist Hospital on Monday to assess the quality of services provided at the facility.
In a statement issued in Sokoto, Abubakar Bawa, the Press Secretary to the governor, revealed the reason behind the governor’s unannounced visit. Concerns raised by the state’s citizens regarding the substandard service delivery at the hospital prompted the governor to personally inspect the establishment.
Bawa further explained that dilapidated infrastructure, unreliable power supply, inadequate staffing, and non-functional medical equipment were among the other concerns that compelled the governor to visit the hospital. Arriving at the facility on a tricycle, Governor Aliyu aimed to gather firsthand information from the hospital’s staff.
During his four-hour visit, the governor expressed surprise at the conditions he witnessed, emphasizing the importance of observing the situation for himself. Governor Aliyu was quoted as saying, “Patients and their relatives are exposed to various hazardous situations due to the unclean environment and non-functional equipment in the medical facility. The unreliable electricity supply forces patients’ families to rely on alternative power sources. I have instructed the hospital management to arrange a meeting with me to discuss how we can rectify the situation.”
A reliable source from the hospital’s management informed the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the facility’s current state was a result of previous administrations’ failure to release its monthly allocations.
