Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has expressed his approval of the prompt actions taken by the new leadership of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in response to the arrest of several Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) students.
A statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, also stressed the importance of expediting due process in handling this matter.
Governor Adeleke specifically commended the immediate modification of the commission’s operational code by its leadership, particularly the discontinuation of night-time sting operations. He recognized the significance of this change in safeguarding the rights of individuals during investigations.
Furthermore, the governor highlighted the need for strict adherence to suspects’ human rights, considering this a significant step forward. He called on the EFCC to ensure complete compliance with the new regulations, underlining that such rapid reforms would shield the commission from potential damage to its reputation and prevent unnecessary harassment of innocent citizens.
Governor Adeleke also used social media to underscore his government’s commitment to upholding the fundamental human rights of the arrested students and called for the expeditious resolution of their cases.
He stated, “Our government seeks respect for the fundamental human rights of the students and the swift processing of their cases.”
The anti-corruption agency had arrested the students during a late-night raid on hostels located outside the campus. The EFCC justified this action based on “actionable intelligence” related to their alleged involvement in fraudulent internet-related activities. However, subsequently, 58 out of the 69 arrested students were released on Thursday.
In response to this incident, the new Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, issued a directive to halt night-time sting operations across all the Commission’s Commands.
