Students of Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade, in Ogun State are gearing up for a peaceful protest against the persistent armed robbery incidents plaguing their residential areas.
In response to the alarming situation, aggrieved students have organized a demonstration scheduled to take place today (Monday, December 4) at the polytechnic administration building, as revealed in a flyer obtained by SaharaReporters.
The flyer explicitly calls for all students to peacefully leave their classes by 10 am and march to the administration building for a “PEACEFUL PROTEST WALK.”
SaharaReporters previously covered the invasion of Ode-Remo community in Iperu North Local Government Area, a residential hub for Gateway Polytechnic students, by armed robbers.
The tragic incident resulted in the loss of a student’s life, identified as Segun, with others sustaining injuries, including Francis Dwumfour in critical condition.
The armed robbers, who have targeted students’ hostels, engaged in widespread theft, assault on female students, and indiscriminate shooting during their criminal operations. Students assert that robbery attacks have been a recurring issue in the area, reaching a peak after the November 19 assault.
The most recent attack occurred on a Saturday morning when armed individuals invaded the community, breaking into hostels and causing harm to students, ultimately leading to the alleged death of Segun and injuries to others.
The students are now mobilizing for a peaceful protest to draw attention to the escalating security concerns in their living quarters.
