Seven students from Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, are nursing injuries following a fire incident near a student hostel.
According to Hakeem Adekunle, the Head of Department (HOD) Media and Publicity of the State Fire Service, the fire originated when “a gas attendant at a nearby gas shop was refilling a gas cylinder, positioned several meters above ground level.”
He added, “The cylinder fell and exploded, concurrently releasing gas from the charged hose used for refilling. This exacerbated the fire, resulting in injuries to seven Kwara State Polytechnic students and the gas attendant.”
Upon reaching the scene, the firemen encountered a building with about 17 self-contained rooms fully ablaze. Falade John, the Director of Kwara State Fire Service, highlighted that “four rooms were affected, and eight individuals sustained injuries.”
The estimated properties lost were valued at N14.6 million, while the estimated property saved was N72.2 million.
In response to the incident, Director Falade dispatched his team to check on the affected students and urged the public to prioritize safety measures to prevent fire disasters.
