Former Students Union Government (SUG) president of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi Uku, Choice Enebeli, has assumed a new leadership role as the President of the National Female Students Association of Nigeria (NFSAN). The official inauguration ceremony took place on August 4th at the prestigious Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Center in Abuja.
A Mass Communication graduate and a passionate political enthusiast, Choice Enebeli ascent to the presidency marks a significant milestone in her journey to champion women’s rights and empowerment within the Nigerian education system.
As she received the mantle of leadership, Enebeli unveiled her inaugural pet project known as “PADSAN”. This initiative according to her, aims to address the pressing issue of menstrual hygiene and access to education for young girls across Nigeria.
Under the “PADSAN” project, Enebeli intends to provide sanitary pads and sandals to resource-limited girl children, one of the association’s ways of ensuring that the girl child can attend school without any hindrance.
She stated, “PADSAN is one of NFSAN’s pet projects and this will be the first of it’s kind.
“PADSAN 2023 shall be providing PADS & SANDALS for the girl children in Nigeria, starting from Northern Nigeria.
“As a team, we have come to realize that most of our girl children in Northern Nigeria still roam on bare feet and some with torn slippers. They even go to school barefooted and this should not be so, taking into consideration their health and social status as leaders of tomorrow.
“This is why we want to bring hope to them and make them feel more confident and comfortable in affordable sandals to go to school and use at home. This will also curb some diseases and germs that could easily enter their body systems through their legs when they walk barefooted and come in contact with the ground.
“Also, our team, being very keen on special hygiene, has come up with the idea of distributing sanitary pads to these same set of girls in large quantities. Many of these girls go for months and even years without using a pad. Many have also substituted for pads obnoxiously and it has caused a whole lot of havoc to their body system than we can mention.
“This is why we have come up with the idea of providing pads for them from time to time to help them to stay clean all through their monthly menstrual flow.
“One thing is to have a brilliant idea and another thing is to get people to support it.
“This idea of distributing pads and sandals to the girl children is a huge project that will come up MONTHLY as NFSAN’s pet project and this is why we’re appealing for support from Philanthropists, Heads of Local Government, State Governments and the Federal Government to support us in achieving this Project continuously.
“We will be starting this project by distributing one thousand (1,000) sandals and ten thousand (10,000) packs of sanitary pads to the Northern girl children for this month’s edition and we would love to have your utmost support to make this project a reality.”
The inauguration event was attended by prominent figures in Nigerian politics, education, and women’s advocacy.
It is worthy of note that the revered Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, is the royal father of the association.
