The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Gumel, has offered insights into the recruitment of Nasiru Abdullahi, also known as Chile Maidoki, as a police constable.
According to him, Abdullahi was among the 222 ‘repentant influential youths’ who denounced violence and chose to become ambassadors of the state. He stated:
“All the 222 influential youths who surrendered themselves were properly profiled. The state Governor, His Excellency, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, who already gave them amnesty, directed us to profile them and find out where they can fit in for skills acquisition and human empowerment.”
“Out of the 222 influential youths, 50 of them volunteered to help the police in fighting crime and criminal activities in the state. Nasiru Abdullahi is one of them.”
These youths, following the state government’s directives, underwent de-radicalization and thorough profiling. Commissioner Gumel added:
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s directive sought to reform those influential youths who were previously exploited by disgruntled politicians and other enemies of the state to cause trouble.
Despite the controversy surrounding Abdullahi’s recruitment, the state emphasized its goal of providing skills and empowerment opportunities to these individuals.
However, it’s worth noting that Abdullahi’s recruitment as a police constable raised concerns, particularly due to his criminal record and being declared wanted with a bounty of N100,000 on his head just two months prior. In response to these concerns, Abdullahi surrendered himself, as confirmed by the Kano command, stating:
“One of the three notorious wanted criminals named Nasiru Abdullahi, popularly known as Chile Maidoki of Layin Falwaya Kurna Makabarta Quarters Kano has surrendered himself to the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, upon hearing the declaration of N100,000:00 bounty for his arrest.”
“This brings a total of 100 documented and profiled repentant criminals that so far surrendered themselves to the police command. During the hide and seek regime, the said repentant terror Chile Maidoki said to the police that he used to sleep at burial ground yard in Kano City just to evade detection by security personnel.”
In his plea, Abdullahi expressed remorse for his past actions and his readiness to collaborate with the police to promote peace and development in the state.
“The remaining two with N100,000:00 bounty on each for clues or information leading to their arrests. They are Abba Burakita of Dorayi Quarters and Hantar Daba of Kwanar Disu. Prospectus beneficiaries of these bounties with credible information on their whereabouts are required to contact the nearest police station.”
Despite the controversy surrounding the recruitment of individuals with criminal records and their past activities, the state is committed to providing opportunities for them to reintegrate into society and contribute positively to the community.
