The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken the unprecedented step of canceling elections in 67 polling units within Ogori-Magongo local government area of Kogi State.
The decision was prompted by intense protests from Magongo community residents, who raised concerns about results being prematurely documented on the result sheets, despite the fact that accreditation and voting had not commenced.
According to an informed source monitoring the situation, INEC officials were compelled to call off their staff due to the protests, affecting all polling units in Ogori-Magongo local government. Earlier reports from SaharaReporters highlighted the grievances of Magongo residents, who gathered at the Magongo RAC center to express their dissatisfaction.
They accused INEC officials, in collaboration with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), of prematurely recording results for various polling units, casting doubts on the integrity of the promised free and fair election.
Pre-written results obtained by SaharaReporters revealed that the APC was credited with 120 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) were each allocated one vote, despite the election not yet commencing.
The cancellation underscores the tumultuous nature of the electoral process in Kogi State, raising questions about transparency and adherence to democratic principles.
