The Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 33 individuals, including Owoseni Gabriel, for their alleged involvement in computer-related fraud. The arrests were made on May 2, 2023, at the Iyana Ipaja axis of Lagos State, following credible intelligence received by the Commission on the activities of some young boys involved in computer-related fraud.
Gabriel, in particular, went to great lengths to evade arrest by disguising himself as a woman, wearing a female dress and a wig. However, his efforts were in vain as he was eventually caught along with Salaudeen Hammed, Akinsanya Olamilekan, Olamofe Joshua, Akindele Saheed, and several others.
The suspects were found in possession of mobile phones, laptop computers, and two Toyota Camry vehicles, a 2005 model and a 2009 model. The EFCC’s action is in line with its mandate to investigate and prevent financial crimes, especially those committed through the use of technology.
Computer-related fraud, also known as “yahoo yahoo,” has become a prevalent crime in Nigeria, with young people often being the perpetrators. The EFCC has been working tirelessly to curb this trend, and this latest arrest is a significant step towards achieving that goal.
The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to combating financial crimes in Nigeria and has urged members of the public to provide credible information that could assist the Commission in carrying out its mandate. The suspects will be arraigned in court as soon as investigations are concluded.
