The executive of Mavin Records recently shared the reasons behind not signing Wizkid and Davido to Mo’ Hits, the now-defunct record label.
Don Jazzy, who co-founded Mo’ Hits Records with D’banj in 2006, explained in a podcast interview with Fisayo Fosudo that he couldn’t sign Wizkid because Banky W’s EME label signed him first. He expressed that it would have been amazing if he had managed to sign Wizkid to his own label.
Don Jazzy also mentioned other talented artists he would have liked to sign, such as Davido, Falz, Simi, and Teni. Regarding Davido, he revealed that he had the opportunity to sign him but believed that the “Assurance” hitmaker would do well independently.
“There are several artists I wish I could have signed. I admire Simi. Although I didn’t sign her, I wish I had. Teni is another artist I like. I had a chance with Davido, but I felt he would be successful on his own,” he explained.
Don Jazzy further expressed his admiration for Falz’s work and revealed that they almost had a deal, but it didn’t materialize.
He concluded by acknowledging that it’s not possible to sign every artist, as it requires a significant investment and there are already artists on his roster who need attention and support.
