The Defense Headquarters has issued a clear statement emphasizing that the military is content and improved under democracy, and thus, it has no intention of engaging in any actions that could undermine our hard-won democratic system.
In response to suggestions urging military involvement in the nation’s democracy, the DHQ has expressed its strong opposition to any efforts by individuals or groups to incite the law-abiding armed forces of Nigeria into unconstitutional attempts to change the government.
The official statement, titled “Military’s Positive Experience with Democracy,” and signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, rebuts a circulating online report concerning welfare concerns within the Armed Forces of Nigeria. The report’s call for military interference in our democracy is deemed unpatriotic and malicious, aimed at diverting the Armed Forces of Nigeria from their constitutionally mandated responsibilities.
While the well-being of military personnel is a priority, the DHQ firmly condemns any actions that might push the law-abiding Armed Forces of Nigeria towards unconstitutional activities to alter the government.
The statement leaves no room for ambiguity, asserting that the military is content and thriving under democracy, and will not partake in any endeavors that could jeopardize our cherished democratic principles.
“Under the leadership of Chief of Defence Staff General CG Musa, the AFN remains dedicated to upholding complete subordination of the Armed Forces to the constitutional authority of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The military’s commitment to their well-defined roles in the 1999 constitution (as amended) remains steadfast, undeterred by distractions.” it further read.
