Dangote Petroleum Refinery has demonstrated its ability to meet the petroleum product demands of consumers in Nigeria, encompassing gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and aviation jet fuel.
According to the company’s Facts Sheet obtained by Energy Vanguard, they confidently state, “Dangote Petroleum Refinery can fulfill 100% of Nigeria’s refined product requirements, including 53 million liters per day of gasoline, 34 million liters per day of diesel, 10 million liters per day of kerosene, and 2 million liters per day of aviation jet fuel. Moreover, we will have surplus quantities of these products available for export.”
The refinery’s design is tailored for processing Nigerian crude oil while retaining the flexibility to handle other crude oil types. It also boasts a self-sufficient marine facility that optimizes freight operations, making it the largest single order of five Single Point Mooring systems worldwide. Additionally, the diesel and gasoline products from the refinery adhere to Euro V specifications.
In terms of environmental compliance, the refinery design aligns with the norms set by the World Bank, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), European emission standards, and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) emission and effluent regulations. The state-of-the-art technology employed enables the processing of a wide range of crude oils, including several African and Middle Eastern varieties, as well as US Light Tight Oil.
To ensure resilience against potential sea-level rise due to global warming, the project involved dredging approximately 65 million cubic meters of sand using the world’s largest, second-largest, and tenth-largest dredgers. The estimated cost of this operation amounted to approximately Euros 300 million. Furthermore, the company invested in over 1,209 units of various equipment to enhance local capacity for site works, addressing the limitations faced by even the largest local civil contractors when dealing with the project’s construction requirements.
In order to bolster equipment installation capacity, Dangote Petroleum Refinery acquired 332 cranes, as the existing capacity in Nigeria was deemed extremely inadequate. The company also established the world’s largest granite quarry, capable of producing 10 million tonnes of coarse aggregate, stone column material, stone base, stone dust, and materials for breakwater per year.
Moreover, the project included the development of a port featuring two quays with a load-bearing capacity of 25 tonnes per square meter, enabling the transportation of Over Dimensional Cargoes in close proximity to the site. Additionally, two more quays were constructed within the port to facilitate the exportation of fertilizers, petrochemicals, and liquid cargoes, thereby bringing the total number of quays to six, including a Roll-on/Roll-off quay.
During the civil works phase, an impressive average of 700 piles were drilled daily, resulting in a total of 250,000 piles. The refinery encompasses 177 tanks with a combined capacity of 4.742 billion liters. Tanker loading capabilities reach a total of 2,900, based on a tanker capacity of 33,000 liters. It is worth noting that Dangote stands among the few companies worldwide to undertake the complete Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for a petroleum refinery and petrochemical complex.
Furthermore, the project brought together a coordinated effort from numerous local and international suppliers, as well as multicultural work teams. The Dangote Refinery Plant is a monumental project that will secure an annual revenue of $21 billion for Nigeria, solidifying its status as a legacy project. As an added benefit, the premises also accommodate temporary housing units capable of accommodating up to 33,000 individuals.
