The Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service announced that it successfully seized various contraband valued at N242 million within a span of seven days. Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, shared this information during a press briefing in Abeokuta on Friday.
Adeniyi detailed that these contraband items were intercepted at multiple locations across the state. He disclosed, “Between September 18 and September 30, 2023, officers from the Ogun 1 Area Command confiscated 1,436 used pneumatic tires, also known as tokunbo tires, in addition to 53 sacks and 569 parcels of cannabis sativa weighing 1,179 kilograms.”
“Furthermore,” he continued, “they apprehended 3,149 bags of foreign parboiled rice, each weighing 50 kilograms, along with 32 vehicles used for transportation.”
Adeniyi emphasized that many of the seized tires were not suitable for Nigerian highways, having surpassed their recommended lifespan since their manufacturing date. He cited safety experts who advise that good-quality pneumatic tires are safe for use for only up to four years from the date of manufacture, with any usage beyond that period posing a significant risk to motorists’ safety.
The Customs boss specified that these various contraband items were intercepted at various locations, including Papa/Ajegunle, Ilaro Road, Imasayi/Joga Road, Ijebu Ode axis, and the Odogbolu bush path along Ijebu Ode Road in Ogun State.
Adeniyi reiterated the commitment of the Customs Service to safeguarding society from the entry of harmful substances and ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerians.
