The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, presided over by Justice Hamza Muazu has ruled that the immediate past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN, Godwin Emefiele, be remanded in Kuje prison pending the determination of his request for bail.
At his trial before the court today, November 17, the court ruled that Emefiele who is being arraigned on a six-count charge bordering on alleged procurement will remain in prison until November 22 till his bail motion is heard.
His lead counsel, Mathew Burkaa SAN, moved the application for bail which Rotimi Oyedepo vehemently opposed on behalf of the Federal Government.
His remand order is coming after Justice Olukayode Adeniyi, ordered that he should be released to his lawyers on November 8 after spending 151 days in detention.
After taking arguments for and against the application, Justice Muazu said a bench ruling could not be delivered in view of the plethora of authorities cited by the two parties.
The judge expressed the need for a brief period to examine the legal precedents and review the arguments presented by Emefiele for his bail.
The original charge, which was 20 counts to the tune of N6.5 billion, has been reduced to six, to the tune of N1.6 billion. Emefiele is the only defendant in the new charge.
