Two conjoined twins, born under the care of medical experts at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), have tragically passed away.
In an interview, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, the Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, shared this heartbreaking news. The twins were born on October 5 at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, LASUTH, with an estimated gestational age of 33 weeks and six days.
Fabamwo explained the complexity of their connection, stating,
“The nature of their joining was so complex. They are joined from up to down, which is so complex. Moreover, they must have reached a certain age before they were separated.”
He further revealed that the first twin had congenital heart issues incompatible with life and passed away on October 15. Despite swift efforts by a multispecialty team from LASUTH and other hospitals to separate them, the second twin also passed away on October 16.
The hospital initially celebrated the historic delivery of these conjoined twins, marking a significant achievement for the facility. The female babies were delivered at 8:26 a.m. on October 5, with good APGAR scores and a combined birth weight of 3.8kg.
Conjoined twins, often referred to as Siamese Twins, are born physically connected to each other.
