The Catholic Church in Benin, Edo State, has taken a significant step towards the beatification and canonization of Vivian Uchechi Ogu, a courageous 14-year-old girl who tragically lost her life. Vivian was shot dead on November 15, 2009, by armed men who attempted to rape her after robbing her family.
The issuance of the edict is a crucial move that will allow for petitions, both in support of and against Vivian’s actions during her lifetime. These petitions will undergo a rigorous tribunal trial, ultimately leading to a decision by the Catholic Church leadership regarding her potential sainthood.
During a special mass, the Archbishop of Benin, Most Rev. Augustin Obiora Akubeze, shared that Vivian had been included by the Pope among 25 individuals worldwide to initiate the beatification and canonization process. He commended her exemplary life and her heroic decision to sacrifice her life rather than be subjected to sexual violence.
“Since her reputation for martyrdom and holiness has continued to increase since her death, and after having been formally requested to open the Cause of Beatification and Canonisation of the Servant of God, bringing it to the attention of the ecclesial community, we invite all of the faithful who can give valid testimony to come forth,” Archbishop Akubeze stated.
He urged individuals with information, whether favorable or contrary to Vivian’s reputation for martyrdom and holiness, to contact the Archdiocesan Curia in Benin City.
Furthermore, the Archbishop encouraged the submission of any relevant documents, such as manuscripts, diaries, letters, and private writings of the Servant of God.
He specified that copies of the edict would be displayed on the doors of selected Catholic churches and other locations for a duration of two months.
