A contingent of technical experts from Canada has landed in Abuja to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the recent explosion at the Canadian High Commission in Nigeria.
The incident, which occurred on November 6, 2023, resulted in a devastating fire at the Commission’s location on Palm Close, Diplomatic Drive, Central Business District.
According to Nkechi Isa, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the fire was attributed to a diesel tank explosion in the generator house. The explosion happened during the servicing of two MIKANO generators by a team from JMD company.
Tragically, the fire claimed the lives of two individuals and left two others injured. In response to the incident, the High Commission suspended its operations, with the exception of the visa application centers that remained open in Abuja and Lagos.
Providing an update on the situation, Demilade Kosemani, a Public Affairs staff member of the commission, disclosed that the Canadian team of technical experts had arrived in Abuja.
Kosemani clarified that the experts would collaborate with Nigerian authorities to conduct a formal investigation to identify the factors and conditions leading to the explosion.
In a statement, Kosemani conveyed, “Following an explosion in the generator room at the Canadian High Commission in Nigeria on November 6 that claimed two lives and left two others injured, a team of technical experts from Canada arrived in Abuja to conduct a formal investigation to determine the factors and conditions that led to the explosion.
