A former leader of Niger Delta militants, Asari Dokubo, has revealed that he was employed by the previous government of Muhammadu Buhari to provide security for the Abuja-Kaduna highway. This particular highway had gained a notorious reputation during Buhari’s tenure as president, plagued by frequent kidnappings and murders.
However, towards the end of the previous administration, reports of violence on the highway significantly decreased, as reported by Daily Trust. During a recent visit to President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock, Dokubo claimed that his team of supporters and fighters were responsible for restoring stability to the area.
In a recently released video, Dokubo expressed pride in his intervention, stating that it was instrumental in bringing peace and tranquility back to the highway. He acknowledged that while he had been at odds with Buhari for most of his presidency, the former President recognized his potential and assigned him a critical duty.
Dokubo was quoted by Daily Trust as saying, “If the Buhari-led government can employ me to ensure the safety of people on the Abuja-Kaduna road, it should be commended. Do you realize how many lives were saved? How many people were rescued from depression and trauma? Have you ever spoken to those who have been kidnapped? We did not appoint ourselves. The government recognized our capabilities and engaged our services. The fact that the Buhari government engaged me demonstrates that they understand my abilities. I was not a friend of Buhari. For seven years, I opposed Buhari. However, Buhari, despite that, recognized my capacity and the government approached me.”
Meanwhile, attempts to contact Garba Shehu, Buhari’s spokesman, for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting, as he declined the calls made to him.
